CMAP Board meeting recap

The CMAP Board met on Wednesday. Among other topics, the meeting included election of officers (approved unanimously, with Mayor Gerald R. Bennett of Palos Hills returning as chairman) and discussion of potential changes to the Board bylaws and Memorandum of Understanding with the MPO Policy Committee. The Board and Policy Committee will meet jointly at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11.

CMAP happenings

Crystal Lake Transportation Plan open house
From 5:00 to 7:00 p.m on Monday, September 18, the City of Crystal Lake, in partnership with CMAP's Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program, will host a public open house for its draft Transportation Master Plan in the P105 Training Room at Crystal Lake City Hall (100 W. Woodstock St., Crystal Lake). The draft plan will be available for public comment. For more, contact Nora Beck (nbeck@cmap.illinois.gov or 312-386-8677). 
 
Fox River Corridor Plan meeting
A public meeting for the Fox River Corridor Plan will take place Thursday, September 21, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., at Lake Barrington Village Hall (23860 N. Old Barrington Rd., Barrington). Downtown Aurora Draft Master Plan hearing
A public hearing for the draft Master Plan for downtown Aurora will take place Wednesday, September 20, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the Aurora City Council Chambers (44 E. Downer Pl., 2nd Floor, Aurora). This project is supported by CMAP's LTA program. Contact Lindsay Bayley (lbayley@cmap.illinois.gov or 312-386-8826).
 

Planning in the news

Bidding for new Amazon HQ
Chicago Magazine referenced CMAP data in an article about the region's dominance in the freight and logistics cluster, which could be an asset to the Chicago bid for Amazon's second North American headquarters. Other favorable factors include the transit network, tech scene, and development potential. Coverage in the New York Times includes examples of other corporations that have sought advantages similar to what Amazon , including tax incentives. 
 
New Metra chief
Incoming Metra CEO James Derwinski was interviewed by the Daily Herald about the priorities and challenges facing the agency when he takes over after outgoing chief Don Orseno retires in December.
 
Developing walkable communities
The Daily Herald wrote about the Arlington Heights downtown area as an example of growing interest in walkable communities. CMAP's ongoing work on the Aurora Downtown Master Plan was also mentioned.
 
Soles and Spokes 
A study published in the American Journal of Public Health links the provision of bicycle infrastructure with increased safety and ridership. Australia's national transportation agency released guidelines for the design and installation of bicycle parking facilities. Active Transportation Alliance's "Chicago River Trail Action Plan" provides a vision and key initial steps to create a continuous trail on the north and south branches of the Chicago River.
 

Around the region

Bike Walk Every Town 
Active Transportation Alliance is hosting four free suburban advocacy summits in September and October across the region to give residents tools to build local campaigns to improve biking and walking in their community. The first Bike Walk Every Town event takes place Saturday, September 23, from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the Heller Nature Center (2821 Ridge Rd., Highland Park). Learn more about the summits and register here. October events will take place in Elmhurst, Schaumburg, and Flossmoor.
 
Calumet Heritage initiative 
The feasibility study for the creation of the Calumet National Heritage Area is complete and was recently forwarded, with 77 letters of support, to the National Park Service for its evaluation. Visit the Calumet Heritage Partnership's website for more information.
 
Watershed funding 
Applications for Watershed Management Board (WMB) funding are now available; see the RFP for more information. Project applications are due by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 6. This is the only opportunity to apply for WMB funding for FY18.
