Specific Projects:
Kane County Energy Solutions
Kane County, Illinois
Beginning date: 2004
Ending date: 2005
Project website: http://www.cntenergy.org/
Description of project:
As communities and counties grow, there is a substantial increase in the demand for energy. Managing the load puts stress on publicly funded infrastructure. A unique analysis of current population and land use data, future population and land use projections, and infrastructure and consumer energy usage data was conducted by CNT in cooperation with local government, the utility and a local advisory committee. The Plan showed that the county’s projected growth of 71% from 2005 to 2030 will substantially increase the county’s energy demands. Models were developed to show the potential energy savings that could be achieved through low, moderate, and aggressive conservation strategies. Full implementation of the plan’s recommendations could cut the growth of peak demand by as much as 194 MW and save residents and business up to $990 million. This reduction in demand could allow the utility to avoid building new stations and substations at an avoided cost of hundreds of millions of dollars.
