The City of Chicago and Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT)'s "2014 Bikeways – Year in Review" reports that CDOT, in 2014, installed 51.25 miles of new and restriped bikeways, including 36.50 miles of barrier- and buffer-protected bike lanes. Since May of 2011, 85.50 miles of protected bike lanes have been installed throughout Chicago.

2014 achievements for bikeway installation include:

  • Installation of more miles of bikeways in 2014 than any previous year
  • Installation of bike lanes in 33 out of 50 wards
  • Chicago was ranked the 2nd Best City in the U.S. for Cycling in Bicycling Magazine
  • CDOT significantly expanded its use of bike boxes, green pavement markings, and intersection markings
  • CDOT developed new, easy-to-use, bike rack request website
  • CDOT bikeways program continued coordination with road resurfacing projects, which resulted in 14 miles of new bikeways on resurfaced roadways in 2014.

In addition to installing new bicycling infrastructure, the maintenance of existing bikeways through restriping and pavement improvements continued. A total of 11.75 miles of existing bikeways were restriped in 2014.
