CMAP Weekly Update, 4-21-17
Alternative Futures: Changed Climate. Each month through August, we are featuring one of five ON TO 2050 "Alternative Futures," starting with Changed Climate in April. Thanks to the Chicago Access Network (CAN-TV) for this video of the first Futures forum, "Thriving in a Changing Climate," held last week at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. Dive deeper by reading a memo about how intensified climate change could affect the region, and comment in a short survey. Our Alternative Futures public engagement campaign features kiosks, videos, workshops, forums, web surveys, and conversations on Twitter and Facebook using #2050BigIdeas. CMAP will carefully consider all input while drafting ON TO 2050, the region's next comprehensive plan, for adoption in October 2018.
Next Alternative Futures forum. There's still time to register for "Where We'll Live in 2050," on Thursday, May 4, at 6:00 p.m., co-sponsored and hosted by the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) (224 S. Michigan Ave., Lecture Hall, Chicago). For the discounted rate of $10, please call the CAF Box Office (312-922-8687) and say you are a "CMAP member."
Expressway Atlas. CMAP's updated 2016 Expressway Atlas includes summaries of vehicle miles traveled (VMT) by expressway, area-wide trends, and traffic flow graphics for the entire Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Expressway System equipped with counting devices.
Congestion Scans. We also updated congestion scans for the region's expressway system. The 2016 scans show average speed by milepost by time of day by direction of travel. An index to the scans, presented by highway segment, is on our expressway performance page.
New Metra cars. Metra plans to purchase at least 25 new rail cars and 10 locomotives, as reported in the Chicago Tribune. An important part of modernizing the regional transit system, these would be Metra's first new rail cars since 2006, with the exception of cars purchased for the Metra Electric District line.
