CMAP Weekly Update, 5-31-14

First Off...

LTA/CPP informational session.  CMAP and the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) will hold an information session on Tuesday, June 3, at 9:00 a.m. in the CMAP offices (233 S. Wacker Drive, Suite 800, Chicago) on planning assistance and grants available for local projects across metropolitan Chicago through the RTA Community Planning Program and CMAP Local Technical Assistance Program. To RSVP, contact Dan Olson (dolson@cmap.illinois.gov or 312-386-8760). For application materials and more, see www.rtachicago.com/applications

Manufacturing assistance.  Congratulations to Cook County and its partners in the Chicago Metro Metal Consortium Manufacturing Community for having been selected as one of 12 Manufacturing Communities, which will have access to assistance from eleven federal agencies with $1.3 billion available for economic development support.  Read more in a U.S. Department of Commerce press release.

MPC roundtable.  Yesterday I enjoyed being part of a Metropolitan Planning Council discussion on implementation of the GO TO 2040 plan.  Panelists included RTA acting executive director Leanne Redden, Aurora mayor Thomas Weisner (both of whom are CMAP Board members), and Cook County Economic Development bureau chief Herman Brewer. It was a good opportunity to hear how people perceive the plan's implementation to date.  A video of the session is available.

Priority deadline today:  FLIP applications.  Priority applications for CMAP's 2014-15 Future Leaders in Planning program must be postmarked or emailed by today.  Participating high school students from throughout the region meet one Saturday per month to learn about issues that shape our region's economy and quality of life.   Contact Ricardo Lopez (rlopez@cmap.illinois.gov or 312-386-8766).

Policy Updates. We published the second in the series of three Policy Updates that assess the potential for increased energy efficiency in the region's manufacturing sector. The second piece examines how infrastructure, regulations, and market changes may affect energy consumption in the manufacturing sector.

Other News and Announcements

Regional bicycle system. The Chicago Tribune described new bicycle routes under development to complete the region's system of trails. CMAP's Tom Murtha was interviewed.

Soles and Spokes. We highlighted a new Rails-to-Trails Conservancy report on the "Rails-with-Trails" concept.  The report examines the characteristics of 88 existing multi-use trails in 33 states and finds that these trails along active freight, passenger, and tourist rail lines are safe, common, and increasing in number.

CMAP media tip sheet.  CMAP's media tip sheet includes information on freight and manufacturing trends in the O'Hare subregion, regional implications of federal transportation reauthorization proposals, linkages between energy efficiency and economic competitiveness, and more.
