A June 2014 Advocacy Advance report from the Alliance for Biking and Walking and the League of American Bicyclists, How Communities are Paying for Innovative On-street Bicycle Infrastructure, provides transportation officials and advocates with examples of how protected bike lanes are being paid for in communities and agencies across U.S.   The report's examples and information are intended to give support and "permission by example" to other communities and their efforts to implement innovative bikeways.

The report relied on the detailed inventory of protected bike lanes from the Green Lane Project of People-For-Bikes.  Report authors contacted city officials in charge of 75 existing and planned protected bikeway projects to ask about their funding sources.
