The western portion of the Cal-Sag Trail, from Cicero Avenue in Alsip to Illinois Route 83 in Lemont, is now open for residents to use for recreational activities such as biking, walking, hiking, and fishing. The trail, which will eventually be 26 miles long, received partial funding through the CMAP Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) program. The Chicago Tribune, CBS Chicago Local, and WBEZ Morning Shift described the June 6 grand opening events.

The multi-use path is built almost entirely along the Cal-Sag Channel and Calumet River and links residents to regional trails, forests preserves, jobs, public transit, and more. The GO TO 2040 comprehensive regional plan calls for making significant, criteria-based investments in parks and open space, including growing the network of parks, forest preserves, and lakefront areas.  The concept of the trail dates back to 1970, and the campaign to build it began in 2004. Ground broke on the project in June 2014.  Anchored on its eastern end by the Millennium Reserve, the remaining 13 miles of the trail will be paved in 2016 and 2017.
