The Boston NPR program, Here & Now, discussed the installation of a protected  intersection in Salt Lake City, Utah with the city's transportation director and the director of the National Institute for Transportation and Communities at Portland State University.  Similar protected intersections are in various stages of completion in Davis, CA, Austin, TX, Boston, MA, and other cities across the country -- including a partially protectected intersection in downtown Chicago, created as part of the Loop Link transit project.

Protected intersections arrange traffic so that the visibility and predictability of all modes of traffic is increased by deterring conflicts between cyclists and cars. For more information, see this earlier post on this innovative design.
