The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) has released a design guide on developing transit facilities on city streets. Following NACTO's influential Urban Street Design Guide and Urban Bikeway Design Guide, this guide stems from the basis that reliable transit routes -- whether bus or rail -- depend on a commitment to transit at every level of design.
The guide is intended to provide departments of transportation and public transportation agencies the tools to go beyond simply accommodating existing service and instead to actively prioritize transit on streets. It provides best practice strategies such as transit-friendly signals, dedicated lanes, boarding islands, and intersection design and turn management. The guide was developed through a new peer network of NACTO members and transit agency partners.
