A new report from the National Center for Safe Routes to School (SRTS) examines the accomplishments of the SRTS Program over the 10 year period since it was enacted under the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users.

Since 2005, the SRTS program has provided the Federal Highway Administration with over $1 billion in dedicated funding to increase walking and bicycling to school. In July 2012, when the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act  was enacted, SRTS activities were eligible to compete for funding—along with other eligible activities— under the Transportation Alternatives Program whose funding was apportioned to state departments of transportations  and urbanized areas with populations over 200,000.
