The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published, "Advancing Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety: A Primer for Highway Safety Professionals." The primer is intended for highway safety professionals – including state highway safety officials, as well as their partners and grantees – as a reference for an integrated, comprehensive approach to improving pedestrian and bicycle safety.

The primer summarizes the most promising infrastructure treatments and behavioral programs available for addressing specific safety problems and highlights how these approaches may be combined and implemented. It identifies opportunities for inter-agency collaboration on infrastructure, education and enforcement programs, and funding to create more comprehensive safety programs. The report provides real-world examples of what states and local jurisdictions are doing to comprehensively address pedestrian and bicycle issues.
