A report from the Federal Highway Administration's Global Benchmarking Program explores similarities and differences in the approach to bicycle network planning and facility design in the Netherlands and the United States. The report provides a brief historical overview as context for the discussion of bicycle planning, design approaches, and existing physical infrastructure as observed by U.S. transportation leaders (including U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Foxx) during a visit to the Netherlands in August 2015. Following the discussion of respective design approaches, the report highlights four specific areas that guide practice in Holland and are applicable to transportation practice in the U.S.
