State DOTs endorse NACTO Urban Street Design Guide

The Massachusetts, California, Minnesota, Utah, Washington, and Tennessee Departments of Transportation have officially endorsed the Urban Street Design Guide, which was developed by the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), and which we highlighted in an earlier post.

In his endorsement letter, MassDOT Secretary Richard Davey stated that "the Urban Street Design Guide provides essential design principles which can create safe, multimodal urban street designs.  MassDOT is pleased to share in NACTO's commitment to improving urban streets and creating sustainable street designs."  Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty, in a press release, said that "California's transportation system must be multimodal and support bicycles and pedestrians as well as automobiles. Caltrans' endorsement of these innovative street design options is an important part of modernizing our approach to improving transportation for all Californians."

The guide's goal is to provide tools and tactics that cities can use to make urban streets safer, more livable, and more economically vibrant.
