A new report from the Federal Highway Administration presents ideas to improve pedestrian safety at urban and suburban crossing locations by identifying and evaluating low- to medium-cost measures to reduce pedestrian fatalities and injuries at such locations.

The research effort focuses on measures that have not previously been rigorously evaluated from a safety perspective and that can be implemented at unsignalized pedestrian crossing locations.

The report includes general background information, a description of research objectives and the approach used for closed-course and open-road studies conducted as part of the research. The report provides a review of literature and of data sources, presents the results of local field observations and both closed-course and open-road studies, and offers general conclusions and important findings.
