Bikeshare trips may substitute or complement more conventional transit mode trips, as outlined in a study that examines the impact of the Capital Bikeshare (CaBi) program on Metrorail ridership in Washington, D.C.

When mapping CaBi trips, Metrorail stations appear as important origins and destinations, with six of seven CaBi stations producing more than 500 trips being located near Metrorail stations.  By using regression analyses, researchers also found that public transit ridership is positively associated with CaBi ridership at station level, with results suggesting that a 10 percent increase in annual CaBi ridership contributed to a 2.8 percent increase in average daily Metrorail ridership. The document discusses policy implications and potential recommendations on the basis of these results.
