CityLab, as part of its "City Makers: Connections – How urban breakthrough spread and evolve" series, has created an interactive timeline of the history of the global bike-share boom.  Using photos and graphics, the website tells the story of how quickly the idea of bike sharing spread once the right technology was developed, despite the bumps along the way.

Starting with a modest public bike program in Copenhagen in 1995, the idea has spread to nearly 900 such systems worldwide, with an estimated 1,000,000 bicycles in circulation, including Chicago's Divvy bikes launched in 2013.

The series previously celebrated the history of Rails-to-Trails, which included The 606 trail.
