Alta Planning + Design has produced a white paper on building protected intersections.  The report offers an overview of protected intersections, discussing their history, basic elements, and potential benefits. The paper also provides design guidance for creating protected intersections in the North American roadway context, including information on their research status, regulatory implications, and fundamental geometric design principles surrounding  the concept.

As of December 2015, there were only six locations in North America that the authors believe qualify as protected intersections and the report outlines the operational details and photographs of all six - one of which is in downtown Chicago.  The report concludes with the observation that protected intersections are quickly becoming an accepted and implemented treatment type and will likely be included in the next edition of NACTO's Urban Bikeway Design Guide.
