The City of Chicago is looking for taxi, livery, and similar public passenger fleet vendors interested in reducing their fleets‘ carbon footprint to apply for the Drive Clean Taxi program.  The pilot initiative seeks to replace up to 120 of Chicago's 6,300 taxis by offering discount vouchers of 80 percent or up to $10,000 toward the purchase of new electric or compressed natural gas vehicles. Unlike other grant or rebate programs, this voucher program will enable vendors to purchase or lease cleaner vehicles at a reduced cost at the point of sale. To launch the program, the City of Chicago has partnered with CALSTART, a non-profit organization working to spur the growth of clean transportation alternatives. Vouchers will be available on a first-come, first-served basis once a list of eligible vehicles is determined later this summer. Drive Clean Taxi is an expansion of the $14 million Drive Clean Chicago initiative, which is partially funded through the CMAP Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Improvement program. Drive Clean targets trucks, taxis, and fueling stations in its efforts to accelerate the adoption of alternative fuel vehicles region-wide. Since 2010, 400 cleaner vehicles for Chicago area fleets and 220 alternative fuel stations have been deployed through Drive Clean. Recently, the Tribune covered some of the program's successes.
