CMAP Weekly Update, 4-18-14
MPC roundtables. Cook County board president Toni Preckwinkle and Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner, who also serves on the CMAP and Illinois Tollway boards, will join me in a Metropolitan Planning Council's roundtable on the GO TO 2040 plan update on May 29. The event, which will discuss the role of partners in the plan implementation, also includes Leanne Redden of the Regional Transportation Authority. The previous week on May 20, MPC is holding another roundtable, "Smart Systems, Resilient Regions," on improving public services related to transportation, communications, water, and flood management. Both roundtables will be held from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at MPC offices (140 S. Dearborn, Suite 1400, Chicago).
Other News and Announcements
Soles and Spokes. Soles and Spokes featured the League of American Bicyclists report, "Where We Ride: An Analysis of Bicycling in American Cities," which uses 2012 U.S. Census American Community Survey journey-to-work data to look at national trends in bicycling. We also highlighted a report from the Oregon Department of Transportation on how to design, install, and operate bicycle-specific traffic signals. For reference, see our earlier post on the Federal Highway Administration's interim approval for bicycle traffic signals.CMAQ in the news. The Daily Herald described Naperville's implementation of a new integrated traffic management system, which is partially funded through CMAP's Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement program.
State bike plan, ITEP grant. The Illinois Department of Transportation released the state's first-ever bike plan this week. Read more in Streetsblog. The department also announced $52.7 million in awards through its Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program.
Costal grant program. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will accept new applications for its Illinois Coastal Management Program starting April 18, and an informational session will be held this Monday, April 21, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the James R. Thompson Center (100 W. Randolph Street, Chicago). RSVP to DNR.CMP@Illinois.gov.
GPA conference. The Grants Professionals Association Chicago Area Chapter will hold its annual conference on May 2 in Chicago from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
TRB article. The Transportation Research Board featured an article, "Assessment of Public-Private Partnership in Travel Information Provision," co-authored by CMAP's Claire Bozic.
Local Technical Assistance
Municipal staff and elected officials are invited to attend a free form-based codes workshop on May 16 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the CMAP offices. Attendees will also learn about opportunities to apply for form-based code assistance through the next LTA call for projects.
