CMAP Strategic Guide for Expressway-based Bus Rapid Transit

Bus Rapid Transit is gaining momentum as a flexible, cost-effective solution that improves transit and reduces congestion. Because BRT is an important strategy in the GO TO 2040 comprehensive regional plan, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning has published Land Use Policies and Strategies for Expressway-Based Bus Rapid Transit, a guide for municipalities, transit providers, and transportation agencies.

It includes an overview of potential BRT projects in the region, in addition to recommended policies and strategies in four areas:

  • Station Siting
  • Planning for BRT-Supportive Land Use in an Expressway Environment
  • Pedestrian and Bicycle Connectivity
  • Marketing and Permanence
