Community Data Snapshots
This area of the CMAP website contains a set of Community Data Snapshots that summarize demographics, housing, employment, transportation habits, retail sales, property values, and land use in metropolitan Chicago's 284 municipalities. You may browse the municipalities alphabetically or grouped by county. Snapshots are also available for all 77 Chicago Community Areas. Each snapshot is presented in an easy-to-print PDF file. The underlying data for the Snapshots can be downloaded from the CMAP Data Hub.
DATA UPDATE: All Community Data Snapshots were updated in June 2017 with new information from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2011-15 American Community Survey, CMAP's 2013 Land Use Inventory and 2015 Vehicle Miles Traveled analysis, and 2015/2016 data from the Illinois Department of Employment Security and the Illinois Department of Revenue. Updated data cover topics like housing, educational attainment, household income, and other population characteristics.
The snapshots will tell you a lot about your community and neighboring ones in the region's seven counties. How does land use in Algonquin compare with Zion? Which municipality has the largest population? (Okay, that was too easy, so can you tell which has the smallest population?) How do residents of Blue Island, for example, travel to work? Is there much multi-family housing in Lockport?
As noted in each profile, the data comes from multiple sources, which include the U.S. Census Bureau, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the Illinois Department of Employment Security, the Illinois Department of Revenue, and CMAP. Please note that the American Community Survey is a sample-based data product. Exercise caution when using data from low-population municipalities, as the margins of error are often large compared to the estimate.
