U.S. Census Bureau 2007 County Population Estimates

County Total Population Estimates - 2007 Data 

  • Since 2000, the regional growth rate is estimated at 4.5%.
  • Kendall County total population grew by 77%, the fastest pace of all seven counties in the region from 2000 to 2007.
  • Will County population accounted for 47% of all growth in the region (an increase of 171,000 persons) for the seven-year period.
  • Cook County was the only county to decline (-1.7%) in total population since 2000.

2007 County Population Estimates - Latino Population

  • One in every 5 persons in the 7 county metropolitan region is Latino.
  • The Latino regional population grew by almost 340,000 persons, or more than 24%, during the years 2000-2007.
  • Kendall County was home to the greatest percentage growth of Latinos, increasing by 278% since 2000.

2007 County Population Estimates – Black Population

  • Cook County led all other counties in the nation for the total number of Black residents (1.4 million.), despite an annual population decrease of -1.3%.
  • Cook County is home to 87% of all Black residents of the 7-county region.
  • Will County had the greatest number increase of Black residents, adding more than 21,000 since 2000.

2007 Population Estimates – Asian Population

  • The Asian population grew by more than 28% (108,000 persons) in the region during the last seven years.
  • Cook County had the largest growth of any county and added more than 42,000 Asians.
  • If it were not for growth in Cook and Kendall counties, Asian population in the region would have declined between years 2006 - 2007. Asian population decreased in DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties.

2007 Population Estimates – Age 65 years and Older 

  • As expected, the percentage of persons age 65 and older increased within the region between years 2000 - 2007.
  • The percentage of persons age 65 years and older grew in six of seven counties between years 2006 – 2007. Kendall County was the only county showing a decline, (7.3% to 6.9% respectively).
  • The magnitude of change in year 2007 ranged between 6.9% (Kendall County), and 11.7% (Cook County).
