Making the Connection: Community Health, Land Use, and Transportation Planning Workshop

With the help of CMAP's Human and Community Development Working Committee, CMAP held its first Making the Connection: Community Health, Land Use, and Transportation Planning Workshop on Monday, December 9, 2013.

The audience for the workshop included nearly 50 representatives from Counties and the City of Chicago—large jurisdictions that are active in public health, land use, and transportation planning.  Organizations with a regional focus and interest in the built environment also participated.

The workshop had two primary purposes:

  • To discuss coordination between County and Chicago departments that address public health, land use, and transportation; and
  • To help CMAP's efforts to integrate public health into its Local Technical Assistance work.

The workshop covered the benefits of coordinating public health, land use and transportation planning; successful integration of public health, land use and transportation planning in DuPage County and Kane County as well as in LTA projects—City of Berwyn's comprehensive plan and Village of Park Forest's sustainability plan; and next steps for collaboration.  For more details about the workshop, please see the agenda and summary

The workshop featured several opportunities for rich dialogue among the departments from the various jurisdictions.  One of the workshop highlights includes the group's brainstorming session where they shared ideas about how to coordinate public health, land use and transportation as well as the resources needed to integrate these three areas into local planning efforts.  CMAP is currently reviewing this feedback to determine next steps with supporting coordination throughout our region.  Please revisit this webpage for updates.
