NEW! Call for Projects: Local Technical Assistance and Community Planning Programs. Planning assistance and grants for local projects across metropolitan Chicago are now available through the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Community Planning Program and CMAP Local Technical Assistance Program at www.rtachicago.com/applications. Proposed local planning projects should implement recommendations of the GO TO 2040 comprehensive regional plan. Applications are due Wednesday, June 26 at noon. An informational session was held on May 15, and the presentation is available on-line. Contact Erin Aleman (ealeman@cmap.illinois.gov or 312-386-8816) to be added to our LTA distribution list. About the Local Technical Assistance (LTA) Program
In October 2010, CMAP was awarded a Sustainable Communities Regional Planning grant by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to assist with the implementation of GO TO 2040. With funding from this grant, CMAP has launched the Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program, which involves providing assistance to communities across the Chicago metropolitan region to undertake planning projects that advance the principles of GO TO 2040. See below for the most recent update on project status, as well as links to several projects that are underway. CMAP has initiated 102 local projects with local governments, nonprofits, and intergovernmental organizations to address local issues at the intersection of transportation, land use, and housing, including the natural environment, economic growth, and community development. LTA Updates
Among recent highlights from the CMAP LTA program:
- The Village of Bensenville recently kicked off work to develop a new comprehensive plan. Visit www.cmap.illinois.gov/lta/bensenville to stay up to date on this project's progress.
- The Chicago Tribune and My Suburban Life described this week's presentation to the Glen Ellyn Village Board on its draft downtown streetscape and parking study.
- The Norridge-Harwood Heights News described efforts to update the Village of Norridge's zoning ordinance to better-reflect the Norridge comprehensive plan, which was unanimously adopted last fall. The Village's comprehensive plan also takes a close at how to serve its growing senior population, which was referenced in a Medill Reports Chicago article on aging in place.
- My Suburban Life described goals of incoming Riverside Village President Ben Sells, including implementation of the recently adopted Central Business District plan.
- Trib columnist John McCarron mentioned the Green Healthy Neighborhoods land use plan in a piece on Chicago's struggle with the foreclosure crisis. The City of Chicago, LISC/Chicago, Teamwork Englewood, the South East Chicago Commission, and Washington Park Consortium were partners with CMAP on the land use plan.
- The Lake-County News Sun described Waukegan's efforts to develop a commercial corridor plan for Washington Street, including an upcoming workshop to be held on June 20.
