Joint Center for Housing Studies Releases Annual State of the Nation’s Housing Study
On June 14, 2012, the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University released its annual State of the Nation’s Housing for 2012. The study compiles a number of demographic, economic, and housing indicators to assess the current and upcoming conditions of the U.S. housing market. This year’s report projects a modest recovery in the nation’s housing market for 2012, based in large part on a continued economic recovery. The authors note that the multifamily market is already well on the way to recovery and believe that, if unemployment continues to fall, demographic drivers and improved individual economic conditions will lead to improvement in the for-sale market despite ongoing foreclosures and the large number of underwater homeowners. Finally, the report also emphasizes the need to preserve and produce affordable housing, particularly in the face of rising rents, decreased access to credit, and ongoing unemployment and underemployment. Providing a range of housing choices is also a major recommendation of GO TO 2040.
