A New Comprehensive Plan for Northlake

On May 20, 2013, the City of Northlake Comprehensive Plan was unanimously adopted by Northlake City Council. The plan will provide a framework to make informed investment decisions to address current issues and reach long term goals.

Located in west Cook County, the City of Northlake's close proximity to downtown Chicago is reflected in its name -- a combination of both North Avenue and Lake Street. Originally incorporated in 1949, Northlake's dedicated City Council and active community reflects the city's moniker of "The City of Friendly People." As the city works to better quality of life for families and businesses, Northlake offers many opportunities for bright future through real estate and relocation, education, parks and recreation, as well as shopping and dining. In addition to great schools and institutions, well-maintained parks, and easy access to forest preserves, the city offers a convenient location to major highways and O'Hare International Airport. Northlake's strong and robust business core along North Avenue also attracts local and regional businesses alike, an important asset to the community.

Now, building on these assets, CMAP's Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program is helping the City create a comprehensive plan that will provide a roadmap for reaching the community's long-term physical, socioeconomic, and cultural goals. The Northlake Comprehensive Plan will contain policies and action steps to help elected and appointed officials plan for the sustainable growth of the community. The plan will address a range of topics including but not limited to land use and development, economic growth, open space programming, infrastructure improvements, and image and identity.

The planning process will include three phases with public input as a key component of each phase. The first phase will involve a thorough analysis of the existing conditions within the community using information gathered through one-on-one stakeholder interviews, steering committee meetings, focus group workshops, public meetings, review of previous studies, and available demographic and economic data. Phase two will focus on creating a vision for the future of Northlake by identifying goals and objectives based on findings from the Phase 1 analysis and a public visioning workshop. The final phase will combine efforts from previous phases to create the Comprehensive Plan document containing policies, programs, and actions steps to be undertaken in order to achieve the community's future vision for Northlake.
