CMAP disseminates and interprets Census data for the region, creating the tools for business, government, and the public to conduct planning, research, and development in Illinois. Staff in our research group provide ten-year census population and housing numbers, interpret data for the five-year “economic census” series, and consult on modeling and analysis of that data. To understand these trends in northeastern Illinois, see our Statistical Tables & Maps.
The next census will take place starting in early 2010 with the mailing of brief questionnaires to all U.S. residents. Census data are used to determine the allocation of federal funds for community services such as school lunch programs and the construction of new highways and hospitals as well as the number or seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives. When you receive your census questionnaire, please fill it out and send it back. Here are some general Census 2010 facts. Or read more at http://2010.census.gov.

American Community Survey (ACS). For the first time ever, the U.S. Census Bureau will begin releasing data each year for municipal areas (opens 28KB Excel file) with populations greater than 20,000. This means that data will be available for 79 municipalities (1MB PDF) in metropolitan Chicago, which includes the counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will. Data based on these multi-year estimates will also be available for the 13 municipalities with populations greater than 65,000 and for all seven counties in the region. Released on December 9, 2008, the estimates are based on information gathered each day by the Census Bureau during years 2005 through 2007. These multi-year 2005-2007 data are like a video clip of the population describing population characteristics. Much of the Census 2000 data, on the other hand, are actual population counts for a very for a specific point in time, making them more like snapshots than rolling images.
