Built environments supporting alternative transportation reduce VMT

The Washington State Department of Transportation has released a report that reviews the built-environment characteristics associated with walking, biking, and transit use, and the tools that utilize these built-environment characteristics to estimate travel and related outcomes such as vehicle emissions and health co-benefits.  These tools, ranging from simple to complex, can help to optimize land use and transportation investments for reduced vehicle miles traveled and to communicate such changes to the public.
