First Off...

CMAP FY12 Budget.  We have posted new charts and tables describing CMAP's FY12 budget, including anticipated revenues and expenditures as approved by the CMAP Board on June 8, 2011.  Past budgets are available for FY11, FY10, and FY09.  For more information, please contact Dolores Dowdle at 312-386-8714.

TIGER round III.  Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation posted a Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) for the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant program, sometimes referred to as National Infrastructure Investments (NII).  

Draft Municipal Directory.  CMAP's updated draft Municipal Directory is available for download.  We would appreciate feedback from municipalities, including corrections if needed.  The final version will be posted later this summer.  Please contact Sherry Kane (skane@cmap.illinois.gov or 312-386-8600).
 

Other News and Announcements

Park Forest planning.  The Village of Park Forest will kick off the work of creating a sustainability plan with meetings to solicit feedback on July 12 and July 14, both from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Dining on the Green Banquet Hall (349 Main Street, Park Forest).  With CMAP staff funded by a U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant, our Local Technical Assistance program is helping the village in this effort. 

Water 2050 bill inserts.  CMAP recently started its Water 2050 Bill Insert program for municipalities and public water suppliers to assist with residential water efficiency and conservation outreach efforts.  As an early adopter, Illinois American Water delivered lawn watering informational bill inserts to 290,000 households throughout the month of June.  Additional Water 2050 Technical Assistance programs will be coming in late 2011.

Latino Household Travel Survey RFP.  CMAP is requesting proposals from interested and qualified firms to provide consulting services for a Travel Survey of Latino Households as described in the Request for Proposals (RFP) No. 073.  The deadline for receipt of submissions in response to the RFP is 3:00 p.m., July 25, 2011.  If you have any questions, please call Margaret McGrath at 312-386-8788.

Planning Local Food Production for Healthier Communities.  On July 27, CMAP will host a free workshop for planners and their local officials from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Sponsored by Chicago Center in Excellence for the Elimination of Disparities (CEED@Chicago), the workshop will focus on challenges, opportunities, and action plans to increase community-based agriculture.  Register by July 20, as there will be no on-site registration.  For more information, contact ediesh@uic.edu or 312-413-2050.

Municipal Plans for Energy and Greenhouse Gas Reductions.  On August 3, CMAP, the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, and the ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability Midwest Regional Office invite local Midwest government staff to attend a training session on the basics of greenhouse gas emissions inventories and forecasting.  The session will be led by ICLEI’s experts and your municipal peers from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at CMAP offices (233 S. Wacker Drive, Suite 800, Chicago).  The event is free for ICLEI members, and $50 for all others.  Breakfast and lunch will be served.  Register now. Exploring auto dependency.  Streetfilms.org launched a 10-part video series, “Moving Beyond the Automobile.”  The short videos examine issues surrounding auto dependency, including bicycling and road diets.

CMAP in the news.  CMAP's Drew Williams-Clark was recently interviewed on FOX News Chicago about the new "Apps for Metro Chicago" contest, which challenges talented programmers across the region to develop data-driven software applications that increase government transparency.  The latest entry in Patch.com’s four-part series of interviews with Orland Park village officials focuses on their changing plans to develop a transit-oriented downtown and make it consistent with GO TO 2040 recommendations.

America is Your Park campaign.  Coca-Cola is holding its second annual America is Your Park campaign to get families outside and in their favorite local parks.  Visit www.LivePositively.com to vote for your favorite park to win a $100,000 recreation grant.
 

CMAP Blogs

Policy Updates.  We wrote about a new study evaluating what users are willing to pay for managed lanes.  Congestion pricing on various parts of the transportation network to enhance mobility and also to help fund needed improvements is recommended by GO TO 2040.  We also wrote about HUD's release of its FY 2011 Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA), which includes an additional $67 million through its Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grants program.

Green Signals.  This week, CMAP’s Transportation operations blog told readers about the Sixth International Visualization in Transportation Symposium, sponsored by the Transportation Research Board (TRB).  It will be held in Chicago.
 

Reminders

HUD Preferred Sustainability Status.  CMAP’s successful application for a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Sustainable Communities Regional Planning grant, which supports the Local Technical Assistance program, has also given our region “Preferred Sustainability Status.”  This means that for certain competitive programs, HUD will award bonus points to applications from our region that further the goals of GO TO 2040 and federal livability principles.  For more details, please see this CMAP fact sheet.

Apply for FLIP.  The 2011-2012 FLIP (Future Leaders in Planning) application is now available.  Please share materials with local high school students who would like to learn about planning and contribute to a better future for our region.  Keep up with FLIP at its Facebook page.

Case study library.  CMAP is building a searchable web database of completed local projects that reflect recommendations of the GO TO 2040 plan.  If you know of an exemplary project that should be included, please contact Lindsay Banks (lbanks@cmap.illinois.gov or 312-386-8826).
