CMAP Weekly Update, 10-13-17
CMAP meeting recap
On October 11, the CMAP Board and Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Policy Committee met jointly. Among other agenda items, they unanimously approved a $256 million investment in 39 new transportation projects to be funded by the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Program and Transportation Alternatives Program-Local (TAP-L). Read more in a CMAP press release, RTA blog post, and news coverage by the Chicago Tribune, Crain's Chicago Business, Streetsblog Chicago, and U.S. News and World Report.
The Board and MPO Policy Committee also approved 34 new projects for CMAP's Local Technical Assistance (LTA) Program to support local and regional planning efforts that advance GO TO 2040.
In addition, the ON TO 2050 Plan Preview report was approved. (See link below.) It identifies major recommendations expected to be in the draft comprehensive regional plan, which will be released for public comment in June 2018.
With support of the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois Tollway, CMAP is developing an Expressway Vision for northeastern Illinois, a draft of which will be available for public comment in April 2018.
The vision will be bold, multimodal, and multijurisdictional, identifying strategies to address the most intractable congestion and provide game-changing mass transit options. It will also inform development of the ON TO 2050 plan, which -- unlike the vision -- must meet federal requirements regarding "fiscal constraint." Read more in Chicago Transportation Journal, Crain's, and the Daily Herald.
Congratulations to CMAP associate planner Katanya Raby, who has been named Emerging Planner of the Year by the American Planning Association-Illinois (APA-IL) Chapter. APA-IL's Christina Bader of Farr Associates presented the award at this past Wednesday's joint meeting of CMAP's Board and MPO Policy Committee. (In addition to Christina and Katanya, left to right, this photo includes Illinois Secretary of Transportation Randy Blankenhorn, CMAP Board chairman Gerald Bennett, and CMAP executive director Joe Szabo.) See the APA-IL website for more, including video of awardees' acceptance speeches.

Planning in the news
Pace Pulse routes
Pace Suburban Bus is planning newer, quicker bus service, called Pulse, for some of its city and suburban arterial routes. Pulse routes will have fewer stops, raised boarding platforms, and traffic signal priority, all of which will reduce travel times for customers. Read more in the Chicago Tribune.
Retrofitting suburbs for walkability
A recent Metropolitan Planning Council blog post noted that as people increasingly desire to live in walkable communities, the Chicago region's suburbs are exploring transportation and land use strategies to become less auto-oriented and more pedestrian-friendly.
Pick a Great Place
Through October 27, you can nominate your favorite street, neighborhood or public space for the national APA's Great Places in America People's Choice designation.
Soles and Spokes
The Center for Transportation Studies at the University of Minnesota published a report that examines accessibility to jobs by transit in 46 of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. The Transportation Research Record has published an article on a recent study designed to test systems to warn pedestrians of turning buses.
