CMAP happenings

Non-motorized Transportation report released
Enabling safe, convenient, and comfortable non-motorized transportation options for all of our region's residents will help to create vibrant communities, improve equity and public health, and support local economies. Read a new CMAP report for analysis of the region's non-motorized transportation infrastructure, mode share, and policy around topics including safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, trends in bicycling, trends in walking and the pedestrian environment, and an estimate of the walkability of different parts of the region.
 
Des Plaines Comprehensive Plan public meeting
The City of Des Plaines is working with the CMAP Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program on its Comprehensive Plan update. Share your thoughts at a public meeting on Wednesday, October 18, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Frisbie Senior Center (52 Northwest Hwy., Des Plaines). Downtown Aurora plan
The Aurora Beacon-News wrote about the city council's response to the draft Master Plan for Downtown Aurora and the importance of highlighting the riverwalk. The plan is supported by CMAP's LTA program.

Will County approves freight plan
Officials in Will County recently adopted a multimodal freight plan, as described in the Daily Southtown. The plan's strategies and goals are meant to guide freight policies, programs, projects, and investments throughout the county in a community-friendly manner.
 
Cook County Land Bank
The Chicago Tribune wrote about a new Cook County Land Bank Authority program that promotes homeownership by selling vacant homes directly to homeowners rather than developers.

Register for Calumet Heritage Conference
Registration for the 18th annual Calumet Heritage Conference is now open. This year's conference -- "Nature Reworked: Honoring the past, interpreting for the future," on Saturday, October 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Lebanon Lutheran Church (13100 S. Manistee Ave., Chicago) -- celebrates the work of generations of people to protect and preserve the local environment in an effort to tell the national story of the Calumet National Heritage Area. Register for the conference by Friday, October 20.
 
Next Gen GIS
The Illinois chapter of the American Planning Association (APA) will host a training session, "Geodesign: Next Gen GIS," on Thursday, October 26. (GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems.) The session will be worth 2.00 CM credits. Email cms@ilapa.org with questions. 
 
IDOT ITEP applications open
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is now accepting applications for the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) through December 1. ITEP provides funding for community based projects that expand travel options and enhance the transportation experience by improving the cultural, historic, aesthetic, and environmental aspects of our transportation infrastructure.
 
Regional competitiveness summit
The 5th Annual Summit on Regional Competitiveness, "Momentum in the Mega-Region: Mapping the Future," will be held Monday, October 16, hosted by the Alliance for Regional Development and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Lake County Homeowners Floodproofing Expo & Workshop
Lake County Stormwater Management Commission is hosting a Floodproofing Expo & Workshop on Thursday, October 19, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Libertyville Sports Complex (1950 N. US Hwy 45, Libertyville) for homeowners and property owners in Lake County to learn about products, services, and solutions to minimize flood damages.
