CMAP Weekly Update, 11-9-17

CMAP Board recap

The CMAP Board met yesterday, with an agenda that included updates on development of ON TO 2050, progress by the Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program, planning for water resources, and activities of the General Assembly. Please note that the Board does not plan to meet again until January 10, 2018.

Transit Trends snapshot
Our region's long-established transit system is extensive: Together, CTA, Metra, and Pace serve more than two million trips each weekday at a cost per rider that is among the lowest in the country. CMAP's latest ON TO 2050 snapshot delves into Transit Trends, highlighting data on regional transit use, performance measures, and investment. Understanding these trends will help the region plan to meet our goal to significantly increase ridership. Among other factors, the increasing demand for paratransit service and emerging mobility solutions such as ride sourcing have significant implications for the system as a whole. The report assesses three fundamental performance measures: speed, reliability, and frequency.

Around the region

Daily Herald on bike-ped safety
The Daily Herald editorialized in conjunction with its ongoing coverage of pedestrian and bicyclist safety in the suburbs. The series' first story described the increasing dangers that people face while walking or cycling, and the second told of steps that municipalities are taking to improve safety. CMAP's recent Non-motorized Transportation report looks at these issues and many more.

ActiveTrans training and report
The Active Transportation Alliance will host an online version of its suburban advocacy training program on Thursday, November 16, for residents interested in improving biking and walking in their communities. Registration is free. Also, see a new ActiveTrans report on how to improve bus service in Chicago.

Census data workshops
CMAP is hosting free workshops about how to use the U.S. Census Bureau website. Space is limited, so contact Jon Hallas (jhallas@cmap.illinois.gov or 312-386-8764) to RSVP. The program will be offered at CMAP (233 S. Wacker Dr., Suite 800, Chicago) from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., on December 13, 2017, and January 17, February 21, March 21, April 18, and May 16, 2018.

Inclusive Growth

As readers of the new ON TO 2050 Plan Preview know, Inclusive Growth is -- along with Resilience and Prioritized Investment -- one of three overarching principles that will inform recommendations of the region's next comprehensive plan. CityLab cited CMAP data in a story this week about one relevant example: how the Obama Presidential Library project requires careful planning to maximize the benefits and minimize the disruption for affected neighborhoods on Chicago's South Side.
