A day in the life of the region's transportation system.

Getting to and from work is only one part of our daily travel, but commutes strongly influence our region's transportation system. Studying commute patterns is an important part of understanding Chicago area travel trends and defining the transportation system's overall capacity needs.

Trips in motion by time of day in the CMAP region, 2008.

Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning analysis of Travel Tracker Survey, 2008.

Most people in the region commute to and from work during the standard "rush hours" from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
School traffic contributes to both the morning peak and an early start to the evening rush hour.
The evening travel peak is larger and longer than the morning peak because people make side trips on their way home from work.
