A strong, regionally coordinated transportation network supports the movement of people, goods, and ideas.

Transportation plays a pivotal role in northeastern Illinois, positioning the region as a vital hub in the Midwest and nationally. With an intricate network of highways, railways, airports, waterways, and bike and pedestrian paths, our region is a crucial nexus for the movement of people, goods, and ideas. Our strategic location at the crossroads of major transportation routes has historically contributed to our economic success, fostering trade and commerce.

Our dynamic region continues to thrive with the guidance of the 2026 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). The RTP includes future road, transit, and active transportation projects and maintenance for a strong, regionally coordinated transportation network. Bringing the projects and priorities in the 2026 RTP to life requires a sustained focus on mobility, traffic safety, climate resilience, economy prosperity, and fiscal stewardship. Achieving this vision also depends on robust public investment and sustained federal funding, which are essential to building and maintaining a reliable, future‑ready transportation system.
