The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires municipalities to designate an employee to manage ADA compliance. While the official title may vary (ADA coordinator, ADA compliance manager, and others), this employee is a municipality’s point person on all matters ADA. Identifying and empowering the right candidate to serve as ADA coordinator is critical to making sure the community is working toward compliance and increasing opportunities for all residents.
This session will include a brief overview of ADA requirements under the ADA but will primarily focus on the roles and responsibilities of the ADA coordinator.
The training will focus on:
- Obligations of an ADA coordinator under the ADA
- Identifying the right candidate
- Roles and responsibilities of the ADA coordinator
- Building an internal team
- Development of an ADA advisory committee
- Effective communication
- Case studies and breakout sessions
- Federal, state, and local resources to support ADA coordinators
The intent of the session is to have a dialogue and come away with information that you can take back to your community and put to use. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions in advance and throughout the program. There will be time dedicated to discussing specific issues that may be important to your community as well as sharing best practices that you may already be using.
This training is intended for ADA coordinators, ADA liaisons within municipal departments, and anyone looking for assistance in identifying an ADA coordinator.
