A Comprehensive Plan for Norridge

On October 24, 2012, the Norridge Village Board of Trustees unanimously adopted the Norridge Comprehensive Plan. Guided by a planning process that began in June 2011, the comprehensive plan is available for public review.

The Village of Norridge -- situated in the heart of Cook County -- benefits from its regional location and a wealth of historic strengths that continue to make it an attractive community for new families and long-time residents alike. In addition to being home to one of metropolitan Chicago's first shopping centers (Harlem-Irving Plaza, or the HIP), the Village also offers great schools, well-maintained parks, and easy access to forest preserves, major highways, and O'Hare International Airport. Norridge was originally incorporated in 1948 and grew rapidly in geographic size and population to become a thriving community. Today, there is significant potential for infill development and redevelopment that could create the "town center" that many residents crave, which would sustain and increase the community's economic and social prosperity.

Building upon the previous efforts to plan for the Village's future, CMAP's Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program is helping Norridge create a comprehensive plan that will guide future growth and focus on implementation. This planning process has explored topics such as: future land use; transportation and infrastructure improvements; parks; community facilities; support and design guidelines for key commercial developments; and community identity. Tying the Village's plan to priorities established in the GO TO 2040 comprehensive regional plan, the new plan for Norridge will guide its future growth and drive economic prosperity for years to come.

Public Engagement

The public has had multiple opportunities to participate in this planning process thus far. In June 2011, the public contributed during the first phase of the comprehensive plan by attending a kick-off meeting to discuss issues that the plan should address. In October 2011, residents and stakeholders attended a visioning workshop at the Estelle Sieb Community Center to share their ideas about how the Village should look in the future. Finally, in May 2012, the public had the chance to review the main recommendations of the draft comprehensive plan and provide feedback to staff at a Public Open House.

The Community Outreach Appendix to the Comprehensive Plan is available for review here. This document outlines the strategy for and implementation of engaging the public and community stakeholders to gain their input throughout the comprehensive planning process.
