Riverdale Safety Action Plan

Riverdale Safety Action Plan

Riverdale, located about 20 miles south of downtown Chicago, is a hub for freight and includes important regional arterials, such as Halsted Street. Concerns about traffic safety at the intersection of 138th and Halsted prompted the development of a safety action plan to address concerns about speeding, visibility, and safe access to transit stops. The intersection serves as an access point to the Cal-Sag regional trail, so bicycle accommodation was included as well.

The plan identifies needed safety interventions that address crashes and improve access to the transit stops on Halsted Street, which will be served by Pace's Pulse bus arterial rapid transit service in the coming years. The plan also proposed a road diet along 138th, which is over-sized for the current need and will better serve bicyclists wishing to access the nearby Cal-Sag Trail.

The project included a survey of residents, via social media, as well as in-person engagement at the project locations. The resulting safety action plan positions Riverdale to apply for funding for implementation.

This project is a partnership through CMAP's technical assistance program.
