CMAP Weekly Update, 4-9-21

Improving equity in transportation fees, fines, and fares

Our transportation system is a literal route to opportunity, connecting residents to jobs, education, and services. And yet significant inequities exist. ON TO 2050 — the region's comprehensive plan — recommends leveraging the transportation network to promote inclusive growth and implementing user fees carefully to avoid undue burdens on residents with low income.

In a new report, CMAP details how transportation fees, fines, and fares impact residents with low income and people of color, and recommends policy changes to improve equity. Read more.

Register for CMAP Talks on designing safer streets

In northeastern Illinois, averaged annual traffic fatalities have grown by almost 17 percent since 2012. Communities are increasingly looking for solutions to improve the safety of all travelers. Our latest CMAP Talks webinar, Complete Streets: Safe by Design, will explore how policies and design practices for complete streets can better manage vehicle speeds and create safer conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Join us on Wednesday, April 21, at 10:00 a.m. for an hour-long discussion that dives deeper into these design solutions and CMAP's Regional Traffic Safety Action Agenda. Panelists include Carlos Feliciano, with the Illinois Department of Transportation; Tim Gustafson, with engineering and construction firm Epstein; and Roopa Anjanappa, with the City of Aurora (tentative).

Celebrate Diversity Month

April marks Celebrate Diversity Month, a time to recognize what makes each of us different. By celebrating our diverse cultures, traits, and experiences, we’re able to gain a deeper understanding of our colleagues, neighbors, and friends and learn how to grow together.

At CMAP, we've made pursuing equity one of our core values and continue to find ways to center equity in our work. Through our programs and initiatives, we're bringing together communities from rural, suburban, and urban areas to help solve longstanding issues facing the region. By working together, we can ensure everyone in northeastern Illinois is able to prosper in the years ahead.
