Celebrating innovative public space along Illinois Prairie Path

Erin Aleman, executive director of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), and other staff members recently joined our partners to celebrate the opening of the Berkeley Public Library's new StoryWalk along the Illinois Prairie Path.

Signboards installed along the path feature pages from a picture book, allowing residents to read the story as they walk through the space. CMAP has been working with four communities, including Berkeley, to support innovative public space projects like this.

The villages of Berkeley and Hillside and the Berkeley Park District are working on a shared vision to increase pedestrian and bike traffic along the path, attract businesses to the area, and enhance parks and open space for residents and path users.

By increasing pedestrian and bicycle activity in the area, the villages are well positioned to attract restaurants and retailers that cater to trail users.

Northeastern Illinois grew over the past decade

The U.S. Census Bureau released 2020 census redistricting data last week. This is the first release of detailed data, aggregated to small geographies, on households and population by race and ethnicity.

The region grew by 1.74 percent, or 146,000 people, between 2010 and 2020. All seven counties in the CMAP region experienced population growth.

Stories in both Crain's Chicago Business and the Chicago Tribune include more information on the data release. CMAP will continue to analyze 2020 census data as it is released.

CMAP seeks input on railway crossings in Berwyn, Riverside

CMAP is working with stakeholders to study potential improvements to BNSF Railway crossings from Delaplaine Road in Riverside to Ridgeland Avenue in Berwyn.

Stakeholders, including residents, road users, local governments, organizations, and business owners, can provide feedback on the project through a community survey and identify concerns on an interactive map.

As part of this study, CMAP is engaging in a planning and environmental linkages process. Through this process, the purpose, need, and results of the alternatives screening can be carried forward into engineering — saving time and effort during that phase of project development.
