Envisioning the Chicago region in 2050

This week, CMAP's new Executive Director, Erin Aleman, was on WTTW's Chicago Tonight to discuss her new role and ON TO 2050. She talked about the plan's three principals -- Inclusive Growth, Resilience, and Prioritized Investment -- population loss and demographic shifts in the region, and importance of maintaining our transportation infrastructure, particularly in the face of climate change.

Aleman was also a guest on WBEZ's Morning Shift last week, where she talked about being the first female director of CMAP and her priorities for the agency.

Invest in Cook awards

Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways announced the 2019 Invest in Cook awards at its board meeting on Thursday. Thirty-four new projects will be funded totalling approximately $8.5 million to implement Connecting Cook County, the County’s Long Range Transportation Plan. Projects include transportation planning and feasibility studies, preliminary engineering, design engineering/construction, and transit, bike, pedestrian, and freight improvement. The projects are sponsored by local and regional governments and are meant to improve the County’s multimodal transportation system. Many awardees are implementing recommendations found in CMAP-funded Local Technical Assistance (LTA) plans, including Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Lynwood, Northlake, Oak Lawn, Richton Park, and Sauk Village

CMAP Municipal Directory

The updated CMAP Municipal Directory is now available. Thank you to everyone who submitted edits. The directory contains contact information, including street addresses and phone numbers for municipal leaders and key staff for all seven counties in the CMAP region.

Public comment on regional transportation investments

CMAP is proposing three programs of projects funded by the regional Surface Transportation Program (STP) Shared Fund, Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program, and locally programmed Transportation Alternatives Program. CMAP welcomes comments from the public on the proposed projects through Friday, August 16, 2019. The STP Project Selection Committee is also requesting comments on the process used to develop the STP Shared Fund program, including consideration for partially funding projects. Learn more about the projects and how to comment at https://cmap.is/2019callforprojects.

Public comment period on local Surface Transportation Program methodologies

Throughout the summer, the local Councils of Mayors and City of Chicago will be seeking public comment on proposed methodologies for selecting local projects to be funded through the Surface Transportation Program. Each council will adopt a methodology that incorporates performance-based programming and regional planning factors by Monday, September 30, 2019.

CMAP and the Councils will publicize each opportunity for public comment. Currently the Central, McHenry, North Shore, and Will councils are inviting comments. Details can be found here.

Greenest Region Corps volunteer opportunities

The Greenest Region Corps (GRC) is accepting applications to serve in GRC communities to advance sustainability. GRC volunteers receive a living allowance and an educational award from AmeriCorps upon completing service hours by September 2020. If interested, please apply before Sunday, August 25.

Remembering Judy Beck

CMAP was saddened to hear of the passing of Judy Beck, a great advocate for our region. Beck served on the land use committees of both CMAP and its predecessor, the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission. In addition to working as the Lake Michigan Manager for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for 30 years, she was the longest serving board member of the Glenview Park District and a past president of the Illinois Association of Park Districts. CMAP is grateful for her devotion to the region and the legacy of her outstanding civic involvement.
