To assist residents, business owners, and other users of the Village’s Zoning Ordinance, the Village of Maywood developed a zoning reference guide with support from CMAP’s Local Technical Assistance program. This supplemental guide illustrates major features of the Zoning Ordinance, including zoning district requirements, development standards, off-street parking, renewable energy systems, and signs. New diagrams and tables were incorporated throughout the document, which exists in both Spanish and English, to help explain and clarify key zoning terms and provisions.
Village officials said the guide’s visual nature has helped them communicate more easily with applicants seeking to improve their property. To further improve communication, a Spanish language version of the guide was also created to decrease barriers for non-English speaking residents to make improvements to their homes or open a business in the Village. Maywood’s Hispanic population has increased from 10 percent in 2000 to 25 percent in 2017, according to the Village’s Community Data Snapshot . This project is one way CMAP is helping build local government capacity.
