CMAP Weekly Update, 3-6-20

Local planning events

The Villages of Algonquin and Cary are holding a public open house for the Algonquin-Cary Subarea Plan, on Tuesday, March 24, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m., at St. Barnabas Lutheran Church (8901 Cary Algonquin Rd., Cary). This is the third public event for the plan, which establishes a long term visions for the mining areas along Route 31 near Virginia Road and the surrounding area. Nearby neighbors and residents from both communities can review the draft plan and provide feedback.

The Metropolitan Planning Council is hosting a roundtable, "Meet me at the port: How American cities are transforming their working ports into environmental, social, and cultural assets," on Thursday, March 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Olive-Harvey College (10001 S. Woodlawn Ave., Rm. 1205, Chicago). This event will focus on the design and planning principles of port redevelopments around the country, and how Chicago can learn from them. The discussion also will include the Illinois International Port District (IIPD) Executive Director, Clayton Harris, III. CMAP is currently working with IIPD to create a Port Master Plan. The event is $10, with snacks and refreshments included.

Both the Algonquin-Cary Subarea Plan and the IIPD Master Plan are supported by CMAP's Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program.

 

CMAP meetings

The CMAP Board will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11. Materials for the meeting are available here. The meeting will be preceded by the Coordinating Committee at 8:00 a.m. CMAP Board meetings are livestreamed on YouTube

 

Training for jobs in landscaping and green infrastructure

Opportunity Advancement Innovation, Inc., Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, and others are offering a one day, free training for competitive salary jobs in landscaping and green infrastructure on Tuesday, March 10, from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The training will take place at South Suburban College (15800 State St., South Holland) and interested parties can register by email or call 312-528-3557.

CTA job fair for women in transit

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is celebrating Women's History Month with a job fair for women in transit on Saturday, March 28, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, at CTA Headquarters (567 W. Lake St., Chicago). Learn about career opportunities, working at the CTA, and building a resume. The event is free but space is limited so register now.

New SolSmart resources for solar permitting

The Metropolitan Mayors Caucus created a SolSmart toolkit webpage with resources from the two cohorts that the Caucus led through the SolSmart program. The SolSmart program that streamlines the solar permitting process is funded through at least October 2020.

 

For organizations interested in receiving the SolSmart designation, the overview presentation, “Earning SolSmart Designation on your own," and the recent, recorded SolSmart 101 webinar are good starting points.

 

Fox River community survey

The Fox River Study Group is seeking input from community members on the Fox River. The five-minute survey is open to anyone and will help the group and its partners understand how to build public support for a cleaner Fox River.

Forest management survey

In order to continue delivering targeted attention to the biggest urban forestry challenges in the region, the Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI) needs public land managers in the seven county Chicago Region to share their experiences. Please complete the questions in this survey to the best of your knowledge (it will take approximately 15 minutes) and return it by Friday, March 20, via SurveyMonkey.com, email at mcustic@mortonarb.org, or mail at CRTI C/O The Morton Arboretum, 4100 Illinois Route 53, Lisle, IL 60532. Surveys returned by March 20 will be entered into a raffle for one of ten $100 Amazon gift codes.
