CMAP Weekly Update, 11-15-19

CMAP Board recap

On Wednesday, November 13, the CMAP Board met and discussed this year’s group of applicants for the joint CMAP Local Technical Assistance and RTA Community Planning programs. They also discussed use of the ON TO 2050 Flood Susceptibility Index to integrate stormwater management solutions and reduce flood risk across the region.

CMAP executive director named to Crain's 40 Under 40

On Wednesday, CMAP's Erin Aleman was named as one of Crain's 40 Under 40 for 2019. The list honors 40 people in the Chicago region who are leaders in their fields and includes innovators in government, technology, health care, and more.

Aleman is the first female executive director for CMAP and returned to lead the agency this year after spending five years at the Illinois Department of Transportation. She began her career as CMAP fellow and helped to shape the agency’s Local Technical Assistance program.

She has established equity and the development of future leaders as priorities fo her tenure at the agency. "The region is only as good as its worst community," she says. "How do you help bring them along?"

World Day of Remembrance

Vision Zero Chicago will be joining the global commemoration of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) for the second year with a memorial event in at the James R. Thompson Center on Monday, November 18. WDR is an annual event observed internationally to remember the many millions killed and injured on the world’s roads, together with their families, friends, and advocates for traffic safety.

Chicago’s WDR event will feature a visual display in James R. Thompson / State of Illinois Center (100 W. Randolph St.) from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. memorializing the victims of traffic crashes this past year in Chicago. At noon, a press event will be held with agency officials and partner organizations speaking in memory of these individuals and in support of action to reach the City’s Vision Zero goals.

CMAP earns A for transparency

On Tuesday, City Bureau released a report grading 148 local agencies according to how well they adhere to the Open Meetings Act and show a commitment to transparency.

CMAP was one of only four agencies to receive an A. The report looked at to what extent agencies make the meetings accessible by posting meeting timesagendas, detailed minutes, and making their meetings available via livestream.

The report also considered whether and how the public is permitted to comment at public meetings and whether those comments are restricted and how they are recorded and made available.

All of CMAP’s Board, Policy, and other working committee meetings are open to the public and the public is welcome to comment at those meetings. More details are available in the agency’s Public Participation Plan.

Climate change guidebook

The American Planning Association (APA) has published a new guidebook that will help planners in the Great Lakes region use local plans to prepare for the effects of climate change. The guide, Using Climate Information in Local Planning, was developed with support of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It provides a framework for incorporating climate projections, data on natural hazards, and local knowledge to boost resilience through plans. The guidebook is based in part on CMAP’s work with four communities in the Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program to pilot an approach to assessing climate vulnerability. To download the guidebook and learn more about the project, visit APA’s website.
