In October 2012, the Forest Preserve District of Cook County (FPDCC) released its updated Land Acquisition Plan, which was developed with the input of a number of organizations, including CMAP. Earlier this summer, the FPDCC issued new bonds to provide approximately $25 million for land acquisition that will be guided by the new plan. According to the plan, the "funds will be used to make strategic land acquisitions to fill the gaps in our greenway and trail system, protect the best of our remaining natural land, and expand opportunities for outdoor education and recreation." Furthermore, the FPDCC's Land Acquisition Plan is based partly on a joint effort by CMAP and Chicago Wilderness from the past year to identify critical regional green infrastructure. Since 1999, all the forest preserve and conservation districts in the Chicago area have together secured bond issues worth about $108 million per year in today's dollars. GO TO 2040 envisions further conservation of the region's open spaces, including through acquisition, and calls for another 150,000 acres of conservation open space by 2040.
