FHWA’s Small Town and Rural Multimodal Networks report is a design resource and idea book intended to help small towns and rural communities support safe, accessible, comfortable, and active travel for people of all ages and abilities. The guide provides a bridge between existing guidance on bicycle and pedestrian design and rural practice, encourages innovation in the development of safe and appealing networks for bicycling and walking in small towns and rural areas, and shows examples, in the form of case studies, of peer communities and project implementation that is appropriate for rural communities.

The guide is intended to assist transportation practitioners and decision-makers in small towns and rural communities in providing bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.

An interactive website has just been launched as a companion to the guide.
