States, local governments, metropolitan planning organizations, and others can apply now for the first-ever Reconnecting Communities pilot program. Up to $195 million in funding is available for federal fiscal year 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The pilot program supports communities that were disconnected from economic opportunities by transportation infrastructure. A participating community will be able to use funding to build walkways under existing highways and other public improvements that can better connect communities to opportunities. Applications are due Thursday, October 13.
One of CMAP’s partners, the Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC), also is helping the region plan for this opportunity. MPC invites our stakeholders to use a regional Connecting Communities tool to identify areas in northeastern Illinois that should be prioritized for this funding.
