Apply for new federal infrastructure grants

Grant funding to reconnect communities and reduce delay at railroad crossings now is available under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

CMAP is sharing information about grant opportunities as we work with our partners to build regional consensus around the infrastructure law’s competitive programs and prioritize projects to maximize the benefits for our region.

Reconnecting Communities

States, local governments, metropolitan planning organizations, and others can apply now for the first-ever Reconnecting Communities pilot program. Up to $195 million in funding is available for federal fiscal year 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The pilot program supports communities that were disconnected from economic opportunities by transportation infrastructure. A participating community will be able to use funding to build walkways under existing highways and other public improvements that can better connect communities to opportunities. Applications are due Thursday, October 13.

One of CMAP’s partners, the Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC), also is helping the region plan for this opportunity. MPC invites our stakeholders to use a regional Connecting Communities tool to identify areas in northeastern Illinois that should be prioritized for this funding.

Railroad Crossing Elimination

Local governments and others can apply for more than $573 million in grant funding this year to improve safety and reduce lengthy delays at railroad crossings, under IIJA’s new Railroad Crossing Elimination program. Applications are due Tuesday, October 4.

Funding supports projects that create overpasses and underpasses to bypass tracks, add warning devices at crossings, and relocate existing tracks, among other improvements.

The Illinois Department of Transportation also recently announced its accepting applications for federal funding under the Highway Grad Crossing Safety Program. Local governments can apply for the IDOT program to address similar improvements available under the Railroad Crossing Elimination program.

Safe Streets and Roads for All

The Safe Streets and Roads for All program will provide $1 billion in grant funding for federal fiscal year 2022 to address the national roadway safety crisis. Funding can help governments develop comprehensive safety plans and implement strategies that can improve the safety of all travelers.

The application encourages multi-jurisdictional collaboration. To maximize regional impact, CMAP is preparing one application for northeastern Illinois. If your community is developing a Safety Action Plan, email Lily Brack, who oversees our Technical Assistance program.

Bridge Investment

The Federal Highway Administration is accepting applications for the Bridge Investment Program, which helps replace, rehabilitate, and preserve the nation’s bridges. More than $2.4 billion in grant funding is available for federal fiscal year 2022. The program also expands the list of eligible applicants to include all levels of government.

Applications for large bridge projects (eligible costs more than $100 million) are due Tuesday, August 9. Applications for smaller projects (less than $100 million) are due Thursday, September 8.
