CMAP Weekly Update, 1-21-22

Key housing market trends in northeastern Illinois

A new analysis by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) explores key housing trends over the last 20 years — including the number of new housing units, diversity of housing types, and volume of building permits.

The housing growth patterns have mixed implications for communities. Learn what local officials and housing experts should consider.

How innovative partnerships can fill transportation gaps

At the beginning of the pandemic, when transit ridership declined across the country, Miami-Dade County's Department of Transportation and Public Works found an innovative way to meet travelers' needs through a special ride-hailing program. Go Nightly, a partnership with Uber and Lyft, provided late-night rides for essential workers in areas where bus service was suspended.

As part of our mobility recovery project, CMAP is examining ways to meet travel demand in an equitable, cost-effective, and sustainable way. Programs like Go Nightly offer lessons that communities in northeastern Illinois can use during the pandemic and beyond to bridge transportation service gaps.

Help plan Avondale's future

Honoring a beloved leader, mentor, and professor

Janet Smith, a professor of urban planning and policy who inspired many CMAP employees over the years, passed away January 17 following a battle with cancer.

Smith was a professor in the Department of Planning and Policy at University of Illinois Chicago’s College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs and co-director of the Nathalie P. Voorhees Center for Neighborhood and Community Improvement. She left an indelible mark on her students and colleagues throughout her career, advocating for fairness and justice in community development and housing.

Smith also engaged in many CMAP activities, lending her expertise as the agency developed ON TO 2050 and referring countless students and graduates to CMAP. The agency is deeply saddened by this loss. Learn more about her life and legacy.
