CMAP Weekly Update, 1-28-22

How road salt contaminates our water supply

Road salt lowers the freezing point of water, which prevents ice from forming on roads. But excessive use pollutes our drinking water. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) looks closer at this issue and what our region is doing to manage ice and protect drinking water.

Apply for surface transportation projects

The region's 11 Councils of Mayors and the City of Chicago are accepting applications through March for Surface Transportation Program projects for federal fiscal years 2023-2027. Projects may include maintenance, modernization, and expansion of the region’s highways, bikeways, pedestrian, and transit systems.

More information about each of these unique programs is available on CMAP's website. Questions should be sent to the listed contact for each council.
