CMAP Weekly Update, 9-24-21

How Singapore improved traffic with congestion pricing

Car travel in northeastern Illinois returned to pre-pandemic levels by summer 2021, reinforcing why congestion remains a significant problem for the region. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is looking at strategies that can manage regional travel demand as we develop a comprehensive list of recommendations for a post-pandemic mobility recovery in northeastern Illinois.

This week's top feature explores how Singapore used congestion pricing to address traffic and travel demand and why our region can draw inspiration from that system.

Reminder: Register for State of the Region

CMAP's first-ever State of the Region will take place on Thursday, October 7, at 10:00 a.m. The event will include a keynote speech by public health expert and medical executive Dr. Suzet McKinney; a ceremony for the winners of CMAP's 2021 Regional Excellence Awards; and a state of the region address by executive director Erin Aleman.

During her address, Erin will share results of CMAP's new public opinion survey. The findings reveal residents' attitudes toward key quality-of-life issues and identify successes and challenges across our region. The survey, which included more than 2,000 participants, also uncovers how COVID-19 has affected practices and preferences around transportation, open space, and more.

CMAP receives $1 million grant for regional innovation

CMAP was recently awarded a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Regional Infrastructure Accelerators grant program. These funds will help CMAP and the region pursue innovative funding sources for bridge rehabilitations, Americans with Disabilities Act transitions, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. CMAP is excited about this opportunity and looks forward to working with our partners on accelerating critical regional infrastructure investments.
